President's Report 2022

Welcome to Sydney Telugu Association

TELUGU ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED, also known as Sydney Telugu Association (STA), was incorporated in 1992. It is a non-profit, non-political charity organization with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. The principal purpose of our Telugu Association is to promote Telugu culture through literature, film, music and performing arts. In addition, our Association will host major cultural events to celebrate and promote Telugu literature, film, music and performing arts; teach children Telugu language, literature, music, films and culture; broadcast radio programs focused on promoting Telugu literature, language and music; publish magazines and newsletters to encourage engagement with, and the creation of, Telugu literature; organise seminars and workshops regarding health, retirement planning and important life skills for senior citizens; promote women’s welfare; and assist new immigrants with integration into Australian life. That is quite a lot on our plate!

From inception, Telugu Association was not only serving its members and the wider Telugu community but it was also serving other Indian as well as ethnic communities living in NSW. The Association’s activities and its membership has grown multi fold since its formation and it is able to run all its activities and achieve its objectives because of the support it enjoyed and the help and commitment shown by its enthusiastic and dedicated members, volunteers, business sponsors and their families. The Association’s activities and affairs are managed by the Executive Committee, with a sub-delegation to the sub-committees for managing various groups of activities. The Executive Committee annually organises the two major festivals the Telugu New Year “Ugadi” and “Deepavali” for its members, as well as ensures all activities and events initiated by the sub-committees are run professionally, diligently and seamlessly.

Vision: As the Association now has attained the DGR and charity status it is more important than ever for it to implement and follow good governance standards as we are going to be monitored and potentially examined by external regulatory agencies for our compliance with the requirements of those approvals under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and Income Tax law. The Association is required to adhere to, and comply with certain policies and guidelines recommended by the ACNC in line with other charity organisations. In order to achieve this, the Association, the executive/ sub-committees should all come together to understand and promote awareness around the governance standards/ requirements as well as act with high-level of discipline, integrity and ethics without compromising quality and professionalism at all times.

Mission: to serve the members and Telugu community at large as well as to bring all sub-committees together so that the executive committee collaborates and works together with all the sub-committees and vice versa keeping the objectives and governance requirements in mind which is to serve the Telugu Association and its members with good governance principles.

The Association can achieve its objectives by ensuring the various activities taken up by its Executive Committee and sub-committees (see below) are run smoothly and professionally.
